WASH: Water Sanitation & Hygiene in Schools

(RC Delhi Garden City supported since 2013)

Clean water, better sanitation, teacher training, and hygiene education in schools can improve the health and education of children by creating a cycle of opportunity: improved education, less disease, increased school attendance, improved academic performance, and saves money for their families

RC Delhi Garden City has undertaken several projects in the Delhi-NCR towards developing sustainable water, sanitation, hygiene (collectively referred to as WASH) that involve one or more of:

  • Renovation of toilets (including plumbing, fittings, flooring)
  • Installation of Hand-wash stations for children to wash their hands
  • Installation of Water Filtration plants to provide clean drinking water to children
  • Education on sanitation and hygiene issues to children
  • Daily supervised hand-washing by children before and after meals

We started with a pilot project at the MCD Girls School, Sriniwaspuri in 2013-14 where, in cooperation with the Boy Scouts of America, we renovated 12 toilets in 4 floors of the school. Inspired by the success of that pilot project, we were able to expand the program since then to 27 schools with the installation of 255 toilets, 62 urinals, 345 hand-wash stations and 10 water filtration plants, impacting over 28,000+ children.
